Winning a state championship is a big deal for any high school team. It is the culmination of months of long practices and hard-fought matches. It’s the end cap to a successful season and for many senior athletes, the last time they’ll ever play a sport they love in a sanctioned competition. When your team wins a state championship, celebrate! You—and especially your players—have earned it.
Here are some ways to celebrate a championship win:
- Have a school parade – Winning a state title is a team effort, and no one knows this better than a championship team. This includes your fans! Get the entire school involved with a parade through the halls followed by a ceremony in your gymnasium or auditorium. It’s an exhilarating way to recognize players for their hard work while including students, teachers and staff in the thrill of the big win.
- Start a tradition – Create a legacy by starting a new tradition. It could be a community celebration to honor the team or a congratulatory welcome display to greet players when they return to their home turf. It could also be silly. Maybe staff members face off in a game of dodgeball coached by the winning players. Maybe the “dodgeballs” are actually pies or water balloons to add humor the team and other students will enjoy. Starting a new tradition is not only a great way to recognize a winning team, but to let an entire community share in the pride and build school spirit.
- Display your accomplishments with pride – Eventually the frenzy fades and things go back to normal. New season, new team, new challenges to overcome. But you can keep the history and tradition of your program alive and on display. Recognition in your own “hall of fame” or athletic display cases will keep the memory alive in your school history, and a championship banner will serve as a reminder for players and fans every time they visit your facility.
