Much has been said about the nature of sports and what makes a champion. In the end, however, one thing is true. Every team from little league to professional wants to experience the exhilaration of a championship victory. It isn’t every team that gets to enjoy such a win. Certain components are required to make such top-notch winners. The characteristics of a championship team and athlete are well established.
Has Character
Every athlete has certain mental and moral traits that define him or her. These traits effect how each of us react to events in life and play a strong role in how others perceive us. Whether those traits blend well with the character of their teammates is not always guaranteed. A championship team relies on the strength of character of each member.
Competent
Athletes on any team are like cogs in a machine. They must work together. When one fails, it becomes much harder on all the other players to get the job done. A championship team is full of competent cogs that understand their role and the job they have to do.
Confident
A team that knows it’s good is a real threat. It matters little what opponent or what venue, a championship team is ready to take on all challengers. Their confidence excites them. It makes them unwilling to quit. It makes them fearless. There is however a big difference between confidence and cockiness. Confidence comes from preparation and knowing your team is ready to face challenges.
Committed
Sports that highlight single players differ greatly from team sports. In a team sport, all of the players must be willing to commit to each other and their ultimate goal. Each athlete relies on their teammates to passionately pull their own weight for the common good.
Collaborative
One of the hallmark characteristics of a championship team is collaboration. Athletes on championship teams recognize that every game, practice and training session is a group effort. It is always easier to accomplish goals when a team can work together effectively.
Communicative
If a team is going to rise to the top, it is essential that they are effective communicators. Pitchers and catchers use signals. Quarterbacks manage with code. Every championship team has some method of communicating that enables them to adapt and plan their attacks. This also holds true in practice and off the field or court. Team leaders use good communication skills to problem solve and offer advice to their teammates.
Coachable
Good players want to be great, great players want to be champions and champions want to get even better. One of the best traits of a championship team is that they are prepared to learn new ways to improve. Their talent doesn’t dismiss their need for a coach. In fact, many championship teams succeed because of their willingness to put aside their ego and be coached.
Competitive
Perhaps the most important of all the characteristics of a championship team is its competitive drive. Champions are fiercely competitive and that pushes them to excel beyond their own personal bests.
