5 College Football Coaches with Multiple Championships

College football is a huge passion in the United States, with fans almost as ardent (or more so) than the fans of the NFL. College football represents the best of the game, with players fighting for the Alma Mater. Throughout the history of college football, there have been many stand out coaches with multiple championships under their belt.

Bear Bryant

It is almost impossible not to think of Coach Bear Bryant’s accomplishments on the gridiron. Bryant led his famed Alabama Crimson Tide to five national championships which places him in the very rarified air of the best of the best. Bryant won in 1961, 1964, 1965, 1978 and 1979, also putting him into the realm of winning in three different decades.

Frank Leahy

Leahy led the Fighting’ Irish of Notre Dame to four national championships during his tenure at the famed Midwestern University. Notre Dame had always held a near mythic relationship with the game, and Leahy’s coaching prowess in 1943, 1946, 1947 and 1949 only sealed the deal and placed Leahy into the top reaches of college football legend.

Nick Sabin

Turning the attention back to the south, LSU’s Nick Sabin led the team to four championships during his time as coach. Sabin first brought the national championship to Louisiana in 2003, and won the championship in 2009, 2011 and in 2012. This has left Sabin in the upper echelons of college football coaching.

Barry Switzer

Oklahoma, under Coach Switzer, saw three national championships come their way. Switzer showed himself to be one of the greats in college football in the 1970s and mid-1980s. with wins at Oklahoma in 1974, 1975 and 1985. Swather is considered of the greats in the modern era of college ball.

John McKay

The University of Southern California saw tremendous gridiron success under Coach McKay’s tutelage. McKay successfully coached the Trojans to national championship three times, with the wins coming in 1962, 1967 and in 1972. McKay has left a legacy to the Trojans as they continue to shine in his footsteps.
