As humans, we love to keep track of stuff. Since we discovered our own abilities, we’ve written down and recorded all kinds of things. Cave paintings track the movements of animal migrations and passing of seasons. Epic poems and philosophies are the cultural vestiges of ancient and heroic peoples. Celebrated historical works describe major events of the past. Many of these records preserve significant accomplishments for posterity. Others…not so much.
Here are some athletic records that may be worth leaving out of the time capsule:
- Most/Least Saves in a Game: In 2008, the goalie for Bulgaria’s women’s hockey team stopped 57 goals against the Slovakian team. This record is often overlooked however, because Slovakia shot for 139 goals in that matchup, scoring 82 times to Bulgaria’s 0.
- Worst at Dodgeball: Baseball Hall-of-Famer Hughie Jennings holds the major league record for being hit by the most pitches in a single season – 51 in 1896. When he retired in 1918, Hughie had been hit by an astonishing 287 pitches in his career.
- Can’t Keep Me Down Award: In sports, you have to know how to take a punch. Boxer Strickland was especially skilled in this area. With 276 losses out of 363 fights, Reggie holds the record for most fights lost in a career.
