Every now and then, swimmers may face a break between seasons, or even just need a break from the water. It’s important to take some time off every now and then to make sure you are mentally and physically getting the most out of your swim team. But you don’t want your swimmers returning to action having lost everything they had gained. Here are five ways to keep your team in shape when they are not in the water.
-
There’s often the perception that good swimmers are one-trick ponies. That’s not necessarily true. Often swimmers spend so much time honing their craft that they don’t have time for other sports. Off season is a great time for that, while other sports can also help keep your kids in shape.
-
Yoga can be a great out-of-the-water exercise for swimmers. With its focus on core strength and flexibility, yoga is a natural. Learning to better control your breathing is another benefit.
-
Get outside and have an adventure. Hiking is a great way to get your athletes outside and out of the confines of the pool environment. Of course it also keeps swimmers active.
-
Biking can be another great way to keep swimmers active in the offseason. It’s also sometimes a natural for swimmers who may one day participate in triathlons.

While much of the focus on off season activity may be keeping swimmers in peak cardiovascular shape, flexibility is also key. Stretching as a part of your team’s everyday activity is critical to keeping them ready for the next season.
Just because it’s the offseason, doesn’t mean you can’t keep the team together. Spending time together participating in some of these activities can be paramount to getting the most out of your swim team. Don’t be afraid to get creative and explore other options for yourself.
