In lacrosse, the undefeated season is the elusive goal of every team. To win the championship and never lose a game is the ultimate pinnacle in the sport. If you’re a lacrosse coach and want to take your team to the hallowed undefeated record this season, here is a three-part formula for having an undefeated lacrosse season — from coaches who have done it.

DON’T

Set goals. Winning every game isn’t a clear enough goal either. You need to set performance goals and milestones for your team for both games and practice. This will allow you to effectively develop your team as they grow.

DON’T

Use negative body language during the game. Even when you feel as though everything is going against your team — including the calls — it’s important to keep your team motivated. If they see you constantly shaking your head, throwing up your hands in exasperation or using any other negative body language, your players are likely to lose their motivation to compete.

DO

Allow your players to be emotional. Lacrosse is an emotional sport. A player can channel the emotion that he feels to bring more energy and effort to the field than ever. Instead of shutting an emotional reaction down, guide that energy towards the field.

DON’T

Only focus on business. You want to do everything that you can to drive your lacrosse team to do their best. However, if you push them too hard, then you could cause your players to dread everything related to lacrosse; this mindset will be reflected in their performance. Be sure to make your practices and games fun with an occasional joke or fun activity.

DO

Develop a structured system. No matter how talented your players are, sending them out with no structure sets them up for failure. An effective team system allows your players to work together more effectively, bolstering everyone’s capabilities.
