Branding your school as a great place for a well rounded education is a must. It also is important to promote your school teams as well. This can bring in additional interest from local residents and help raise money for the athletic programs. However, while promoting your school and building the brand, you want to avoid losing the school’s identity. To do this, avoid these ten problems that may cause your school to lose or even corrupt its identity.

1. Don’t Make it All About One Athlete

There comes a time when an individual athlete may simply be better than everyone else. Even if this is the case it’s important to keep the focus on the team in general, otherwise you may lose support when the star athlete moves on. It is a team sport being played at the end of the day.

2. Don’t Make it Personal

Never make promoting the school personal. It is a place of learning, not a place to unfairly attack other schools or put down other institutions because you are upset with something in the past.

3. Set an Example

Every day there is a new learning opportunity to teach. You and the teaching staff should always set a positive example for the students, which is why you need to do whatever you can to make every moment a teaching moment.

4. Avoid Politics

Keep politics out of branding your school. It doesn’t matter if you want one particular political party to dominate or if you are a fan of one candidate or idea, never make it political. This will automatically alienate people.

5. Avoid Controversial Issues

Controversy comes up all the time. It is not your job to take a side as this is going to alienate some of your students, your faculty, staff, and parents.

6. Don’t Forget Tradition

Unless your school is brand new, you should never forget where it came from and the traditions you have. Traditions help bridge the gap to the past.

7. Try New Things

Yes, you should continue on with traditions, but don’t be afraid to try new things to keep the school in the 21st century. Maybe include new tech outreach options or add to the pep rally.

8. Don’t Avoid Technology

Technology is your friend if used correctly. You can expand your identity and reach when creating social media branding accounts for the school’s page and using them right.

9. Don’t Do it Just for Money

Yes, you need money to run the school, but don’t do everything just for money or you’ll quickly forget what the school value and lose it’s identity.

10. Encourage Community Interaction

You need to understand what local residents want and how to incorporate what they have to offer. It’s imperative that you have the support of the community behind you.
