Those who coach high school football know that their team will fall behind at one point or another. Your team will likely be down by a score or two in at least half of your games. The way that you respond to these challenges will determine your team’s success.

When it comes to team sports, analysts and commentators commonly use the word “momentum”. Yet momentum doesn’t really exist. It’s an artificial concept. The truth is that an underdog can come back in a football game even though they are down by a score or more. When your team falls behind, it is imperative that you gather your players together and explain that many more opportunities will arise throughout the rest of the game.

Underdogs come back to win football games quite regularly for a number reasons. High school football squads often try to nurse leads throughout the second half of games as they are afraid of taking a chance that could lead to a quick comeback by the opposing team.

Explain to your team that the opponent is more likely to play conservatively in an attempt to hold the lead and not allow any big plays. They will likely run the ball on offense or throw short to mid-range passes in an effort to burn minutes off the clock. This style of play sets the stage for your team’s comeback.

Use your underdog position to your advantage. The opposing defense will likely shift into a conservative cover 4 or prevent scheme. This is your opportunity to surprise them with a quick halfback draw out of the shotgun or deep crossing routes that leave the opposing defense’s zone scheme exposed. A timely onside kick will also surprise your opponent, especially if you implement it in the second or third quarter.

When it comes to playing defense as an underdog, it is time to stack the box to stop the run. Group your defense in a circle on the sideline and explain that the opposing offense is likely to go into “clock killing mode”. This is the time to force third and long or a generate a turnover. Play man defense and blitz your linebackers to shut down the run. This will dare the offense to throw deep. If they do, there is a high likelihood of an incomplete pass that will stop the clock and preserve precious time for your comeback.
